| While the Memorial Day Holiday may represent the official start of summer and a time when many commemorate and celebrate ... as a 50-something black male who, over the years, practiced integration ... Memorial Day and most holidays do not mean to me what they mean to my white counterpart. And when I now reflect on Memorial Day Weekends, from over the years, my memories are very different than that of my white counterpart. Many who I spent Memorial Day weekends with. Though I have photographed Memorial Day / Rolling Thunder events at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial since 1993 the racism that I confronted on Friday, 22 May 2009 is no different than what I confront when, over the years, that I pass through Dupont Circle. Memorial Day Weekend does not mean to me what it means to my white counterpart. In fact, many of the black men that my white counterpart have assocaited with, over the years, are now DEAD BLACK MEN. |
